A Problem Is Not Yet a Business

Validate before you commit.

A clinician-founder had identified a real problem: patients whose eyes were irritated by makeup. She understood the issue deeply and personally, and her clinical background gave her credibility.

But a real problem had been treated as proof of a business before the solution, buyer, and willingness to pay had been tested.

The early encouragement came from people close to her — friends, family, and professional contacts. That support was useful, but it was not enough validation. People who want to be encouraging are not always the best test of whether a market will pay.

The right move was to slow down before committing to brand, inventory, or product development. Her clinical practice could become a discovery channel, but the test had to be honest: speak to people outside the supportive circle, understand the pain, test willingness to pay, and only then decide what to build.

Method line

Validate before you commit. A problem may be real, but the business is not real until the buyer, solution, and willingness to pay have been tested.
